Title: .405 Winchester 1898 Custom
Post by JdA on Dec 26th, 2009 at 5:33pm
About seven years ago my dad and I rebuilt a 1898 carbine into a .405 winchester rifle. The rim diameter of the .405 and 30-40 match very closely so it's a simple matter of rebarreling the action. Just a neat idea for anyone who happens by a Krag with a ruined bore.

Ouch - but probably a lot more fun than in an M1895 Winchester with that crescent buttplate!

Did you have any feeding problems? Head size is not the only issue which must be addressed to assure smooth and reliable feeding. I'm assuming you did it for hunting, possibly of "dangerous" game? Not the time to have a bullet nose hang up!

Another upsize for the sporting Krag is to go to a new .35 barrel. This will pretty much replicate .358 Winchester performance - much as the .30-40 produces almost the same ballistics as normal FACTORY .308 loads.

There once was a standard .35 Winchester (rimmed) cartridge, also made for the M1895, which was basically just a necked-up Krag.

Well we really only built it because it was my great grand uncle's and the rifle means alot to my dad. But the bore was rotten. It got up scaled to .405 and between the          27.5L x .75" OD barrel and beautifully designed stock it feels like a .22 Hornet when you squeeze the trigger.
