An 1898 rifle unaltered barrel length is 30". Some pictures would help with recommendations. Your previous sight was probably silver soldered on, of course, there is silver solder and then there is silver solder. The actual silver content makes a difference in strength. A good gunsmith should have little problem restoring your altered front sight.
