Title: Krag Carbine
Post by mikaelm on Feb 22nd, 2010 at 3:11pm
I have a krag carbine with the serial # 42xxx. It has no upper hand gaurd and a rear apiture sight.

It also has peices of hankercheifs that are blue with white polka dots in the comartment in the but of the gun. I know that after the San Juan hights were taker the rough riders riped up their hankercheifs and gave them as momentos or what ever. And that is the type of hankercheifs that they wore. It also has a military style leather sling with brass claws and in certain spots of the stock it looks like imbedded shrapnal.
Can any one tell me more about this. Is there a way to see who the rifle was issured to.
Any info will be greatly appriciated.
Thanks

Sad to say you do NOT have an original carbine, as that number occurs in the midst of a range that is ALL rifles.

Carbines did not have slings of the type you describe. Is there a bar and ring on the left side? How ling is the stock, 30" or 32"? Also, if the receiver has been drilled and tapped for a peep-sight, value has been drastically reduced.

As to the handkerchief story, I'm sorry to say that points like that can NEVER be substantiated to the point of increasing value.

As to individual usage - we only have data on about 5% of the numbers, with only a few individuals listed. But, how could anyone research "42xxx"? Do you suspect that the gun was stolen? That is the ONLY reason for hiding the number.

Don't mean to seem harsh, but I hope that item was not sold to you as a genuine carbine, let alone a Rough Rider one. If so, you were the victim of fraud.

I was not asking anyone to shearch the serial number. I asked if it could be done. I dont think it was stolen, I just saw tons of people hide serial numbers so I figured there were good reasons. I got it cheap before I knew anything about these types of rifles so I was not scamed.
I thought that the rifles were converted for calvery. I also thought they put on peep sights on. This stuff has just been told to me so I cant know if its true. I dont think there is a bar and ring on the left side. I will measure the stock later.

If you could post some pictures it would be a big help!! As Dick says the serial number is far out of the carbine range. But if cut to carbine length you should have a handy shooter/hunting rifle. It is amazing the amount of misinformation that is out there!! Stories get told a couple of times and suddenly they are gospel!!! :( So many official and "unofficial" changes were made over the years that pictures are usually needed if possible!!
There is a partial serial number list in the back of Mallory's book, I believe that Springfield Research Service has a slightly up dated list, but that info will cost you I think.
Enjoy your Krag!!!!!!!!!
