Thanks, Tanker!  I appreciate the input.  Your suggestions track my inclinations.  The stock is about as busted as a stock can get, but it should be repairable.  I've got a good gunsmith to whom I would trust it (or anything).   Not sure about mortising the fore-end, though.  Since it is (I think) a replacement stock, anyway, the sentimental restoration target would be the configuration in which I received it from my friend.  The full-on original config restoration  I reckon I'll chase with the Boyds.  Probably have to get an upper handguard from Tom Butts as well, though... 

I read Poyer on the oil quench finish, as you mentioned, but I am not entirely sure what that means or how it differs from blueing.  I've heard on another gunboard that EEZOX oil is great for rust prevention and health maintenance, so I'll probably try that, unless somebody else has a better idea.
