Title: Source for 30-40 cartridges Post by Bob Gay on Jul 16th, 2010 at 6:57pm
I just came across a company that has been in business 28 years that makes 30-40 cartridges. I just bought 100. The email is Wisconsin Cartridge Corp. <wcc@solarus.net>. Give them a look see. If anyone has any info on them i'd appreciate it. Like don't pull the trigger.....

I've been able to order PCI .30-40 Krag 180 gr ammo from the AmmoBank. Pricey (39.95 for 20 rounds), but it shoots well.

that's good to know, thanks! I've gotten ammo from kraghaus ( (You need to Login) at about $145/100, but they are still working on establishing a consistent supply. $2.00 a pop is a little spendier than I'm up for at the moment, but it's good to know it's there (at least for another 4 boxes...). thanks!

I had a buddy of mine look for 30-40 Krag ammo when he was on vacation and stopping at Cabelas. He found and picked up the last box at Cabelas in Prairie du Chien, Wi and found none at the Cabelas in Minnesota. When I went back home to visit my folks in Livingston, WI we stopped at a little gun shop in town. They carried Krag ammo from Wisconsin Ammunition, but were fresh out. My Dad suggested a place 10 miles away between Cobb and Highland WI. They had two boxes of Krag ammo for $33.90, but I only bought one box thinking it pricey. Maybe I should rethink that. I've only had my Krag for a month and have found ammo out in the boonies of southwest WI. When I have enough brass I will be reloading. But, when I get back home I just might get that last box before y'all get it. Looks like it had been on the shelf a while.

I think I drove past the building that guy in Friendship has a couple of years ago. I was thinking he is more of a "loader" than anything - buys brass, primers, powder, bullets and makes rounds. There is a guy up in Medford who gets a bit more exotic.
Hitting out of the way places does seem to work ok - I wiped Dorn Hardware in Madison out of Japanese cartridges and, when he went to reorder, I think he found out why. That was probably kind of lame of me. If your father is the auctioning type have him go to the local estate auctions as they're a good source for older cartridges. Off the top of my head Dairyland in Kendall, Gavin in Baraboo, Kramer in Prairie du Chien, and Auction Specialists in Mineral Point tend to have gun auctions with old ammo. You do have to be careful about reloads but unfired/unopened boxes hit the blocks frequently. Prices tend to be a buck a round or less. I pretty much get all my .32 Remington that way. I also buy Krag that way so he'll be bidding against me. Just have him attend the workday auctions as I can't go to those. Cheers. |

Hi try this url (You need to Login it worked for me. I paid 150 for 100 rounds. they take credit cards too. I started reloading mine but this is a way to get more brass and have fun too. I figure it costs me about .53 per round when i reload. and i have fun trying different loads out. I'm trying to stick with the old 220 round nose.

Wisconsin Cartridge -- just received 100 cartridges (165gr) for ~115.00 incl shipping. Haven't had a chance to test them yet, but the price is right and they look good. Thanks again, Bob!

I have some on order from Cabelas, but they have been back ordered for a while, and the "arrive in stock" date keeps getting rolled back.

If you can't find factory loads try Bitterroot Valley Ammo which sells their products via "Cheaper Than Dirt". They are a more affordable custom ammo loading company and their products are very good. They offer a 165 gr. load.

Here's another alternative: Reload.
Almost every round I have put through my Krag in the last 10 years or so has been one I made with my trusty Lee Loader. You don't need a press or much of anything else. Just the $20-30 or so the Lee Loader sets you back, and your Krag brass from your gun. Modest handloads will allow brass to last 10-15 years; I have cases I have reloaded 4-5 times before they split. Just realized my Lee Loader is a collector's item itself. came in the old cardboard box and has load data for Norma (!) powders. Far as I know, Lee still makes them, and for a shooter that doesn't burn through hundreds of rounds a session in their Krag the Lee Loader is all you will ever need. |

Reloading is a good avenue. I've got the dies, but I have brass on backorder. The best I've been able to do is to find some boxes of ammo at out-of-the-way sporting good shops and reload after shooting the factory loads. Both brass and ammunition is hard to come by.

Last gunshow - one week ago - I could have had probably twenty boxes of nice clean, recent, stuff - IF I wanted to pay a little over $31 per box, average.
Fortunately I have about 160/180 rounds of brand-new, and I don't shoot much; so, that will last me, I'm sure. Found some LC62 Match ('06, not .308) for $25 a box, and I think the seller would have done a bit better for all of it. THAT I should have bought. Fortunately a friend of mine knows the guy - so, I may hit him up before the next show. '06 Match seems to have pretty well dried up in N. Kalif. |

Found one box of 180gr Winchester loads in Rice Lake, WI at $26. Their last box. If I find a few more boxes here and there I'll be satisfied with having enough to reload.

Well, I found another "that's our last box" of 30-40 Krag in Monroe, Wisconsin. So out of 5 places I happened to stop in up in Wisconsin 4 of the places happened to have it. One place had 2 boxes (only bought 1 at $33), the rest one. Am I lucky or what? The one place that didn't have it was an old boy who was surprised that he was sold out. He always kept some on hand for a few locals. When I get to 100 cartridges I'll stop and leave some for the rest of the you and reload as needed.

Plain Old Dave,
I have a "bang loader" also, same old cardboard box. Still use it. Use the rifle also on hogs in OK. That 220gr Hornady does work wonders on those pigs. I still have a bunch of 180 gr Factory (loaded) Winchesters I purchased many years ago. $6.95 per twenty. Sorry, not for sale. Yet. TL |
