Title: 1903 Barrel Contour Post by knute on Aug 3rd, 2010 at 1:24am
In a previous post I was informed that the barrel on my Krag is actually a 1903 Springfield barrel (RIA and 01 09 stamped on the barrel at the front sight). I was wondering if the 1903 barrel closely matched the Krag rifle. I was thinking about putting a reproduction handguard over the barrel. I'd have to cut out for the rear sight myself, due to not being sure if the original rear sight was reinstalled on the 1903 barrel in the right location. So, if you please, if anybody has some input I'd appreciate it. Thanks

I've never measured them, and cannot do so now, but my recollection is that the '03 barrel is considerably thicker at the chamber end (which is why they CAN be set back and rethreaded) and, then, has a sharper transition to the ultimate straight taper. Krag barrels are quite slender, with a noticeable step at receiver joint.
I'm not sure that the spring clips on the handguard would hold properly - in fact, I'd guess they would not. You'll need someone who can give you micrometer readings! |

I have one of these cut down rifles with an '03 barrel. It is not handy now but I think the rear chamber area was turned down. It is carbine configuration with handguard intact. Came with Arsenal paperwork vintage 1930 cost $6.50. Does this sound legit?? I paid too much but liked it. I would appreciate any info. Thanks Gary Behrman
