Title: Howdy from the middle of Va....
Post by GeorgeTheCat on Aug 23rd, 2010 at 5:59pm
I just bought my first Krag. (My first American military rifle! :D) I believe it to be an NRA carbine but I have no paperwork so for the sake of this conversation we'll assume it's not. Anyway I picked it up locally for $195.
The stock is broken and missing the butt plate. The bore is fair to good shape I would say.

So my question is this - Did I pay too much?  :-?

Welcome!!  The buttplate is no big deal, but how bad is the stock? If it cannot be fixed, then you surely got no bargain. However, if you shop VERY carefully for a replacement, you could still break even, so long as you just planned to use it as a shooter/plinker.

As you are apparently aware, the "NRA" model is a REAL pitfall. Since ANY qualified gunsmith could make one, to realize any premium you MUST have the original bill of sale.

That's what I thought. I was thinking I'd get a Boyds "rifle" replacement stock and cut it down. But then again I think the stock can be fixed, I had planed on just keeping it as a shooter/plinker as you described. Oh well. :-/
