I just picked up a 1898 Krag parade rifle in Excellent condition.
Problem is that it was chromed.
How can the chrome be removed?
The bore is very good and it has not been deactivated.
Should I even bother with a project like this?

Got one too and made it give up one sexy stock. Popular wisdom is to hang it on the wall and admire it! Problem is there are about as many types of "chrome" plating as there are varieties of Maple Trees. Many are truly nickle plated. Some were done by the local bumper shop. Some methods of plating may cause hydrogen embrittlement which can substantially weaken the metal. I bought mine as a "shooter" which means someone else took the biggest risk. Bore is 50/50 (first half burned from blank firing, second half like new and the muzzle is super-tight. I have fired it a dozen times or so much to the chagrin of the range officers but I got two three-shot groups in a thumbnail! But alas it is a calulated risk and mine will stay a wall hanger from now on (hey, even my WIFE likes the shiney thing!). I restored an old battle-axe of a stock that looks dashing from five feet away - all ready for display! If you really want to try making a shooter, the safest bet would be to have the barrel put on an unaltered action and used a unaltered bolt. There are several methods of removing some plating but I have tried none of them.

Gerry, Be careful if you plan on shooting your parade rifle. Many of thr chambers were drilled out so no live ammo could be fired in it. Have it checked out by a gunsmith before you try to fire your 30-40 rifle. It may prevent you from being injured or mamed.
