Title: Springfield Krag Identification Post by boydjd on Dec 5th, 2010 at 9:21am
Hello,
I am looking at an 1898 Krag Carbine, however, the stock is confusing me, and I can't tell if it's sporterized or not, as I'm unable to find pictures that are the same. The stock has an RT cartouche on it, which I haven't been able to find any references to. I've linked a few pictures, hopefully someone can help me identify this. Thanks. It has been sporterized. Both the stock and barrel have been shortened. These conversions were done by several companies in the 1920's when Krag rifles became plentiful. Of course, a lot of them were converted by "shade tree" gunsmiths. The M1903 Springfield type front sight on the barrel is one of the best indicators that the barrel has been cut down.I do not know what the RT stands for unless it is the initials of a previous owner.

I'd keep looking, unless I was seeking an emergency $250 rifle to throw in the pickup for hunting. There is NO collector value in that specimen, whatsoever. It is a cut-down rifle, not a carbine, and a UGLY job at that. Spend some time on (You need to Login. They usually have about 6 pages of Krag items, and this is a BUYER'S market - you can do (much) better. Good luck!

Thanks for your help guys. I had a feeling it was, mostly due to a non-existent handguard.
