Title: 1896 Krag Carbine and lots of pics, Serial 670XX Post by Machine on Dec 27th, 2010 at 4:57am
Hi, guys. I am new to the forum and glad to be joining you. I recently bought an 1896 Krag Carbine at an estate auction from a passed gun collector. I have since picked up the Poyer book and have been going over the rifle to check the points of authenticity. I have got to say that there is great material in there, but it also seems that there is a good bit that confuses me when it comes to the reworked guns and armorer repairs and such. If I was smart, I know I should have known more before buying, but that is a big 'If'.
So far, I can say that the stock was clearly repaired. It looks professionally done to me, but I am no expert. I am also suspicious of the handguard. I saw another photo of one with something similar, but not the same. Any ideas about the handguard? I haven't picked anything else out yet that seems out of place, but feel free to clue me in. The sights are authentic according to the Poyer book - I even got out my caliper. Thanks for looking!
