You're looking in the right area. You won't see a plunger or spring, just a shaft that is half cut away. When you put the cut off in one position the shaft is flush with the wall, in the other position it protudes and blocks the cartridges from moving. It is just ahead of the bolt head when the bolt is retracted. If you take the bolt out it is a little easier to see.
