Title: 1898 carbine 119, 12X stock has sling swivel base Post by bucktail42 on Jul 2nd, 2011 at 3:29pm
Hello,
I picked up a '98 carbine (#119,12X), it appears to be correct has a "C" marked rear sight, etc it is in a 1902 cartouched stock, with a professionally done wood plugged/filled in sling swivel base along the heel of the stock. (like a rifle stock would have) I've seen this on a few other 1898-1899 carbine stocks. Did any correct Armory replacement carbine stocks have a sling swivel fill in like this, or are these re-done rifle stocks by Bannerman or ???? Thanks |

All original Krag carbines were on actual carbine stocks. They would not have been on cutdown rifle stocks, nor would they have filled in sling swivel cutouts. This is very common with faked 1898 "carbines".

Pictures of the front of the stock and of the rear sight and hand guard would be interesting. The serial number is on the low end of the range for M1898 carbines. I have seen real Krag carbines where a previous owner has added a rifle rear sling swivel and substituted a rifle band for a carbine band in order that a sling might be used.

How is the barrel band retained - pin, or spring? The serial number is actually quite believable.
