were there any 1894 krag rifels made in the us. in serial number range of #231 ? i have a rifle that was handed down through my family . it has ben sporterized by a professional NRA gunsmith (my grand father) and it is a verry nice peace with lyman front and rear sights .but i am curious of what the action and barrel has for a history(us springfield arms co. 1894 30-40 krag serial #231 ) now as for the research i have done on this  the low serial number isnt available. it just mentioned something about 1-2'000 in production # ..any help with breaking this down would be great .thanks...

Strangely-worded question!

ALL U.S. Krag rifles were made in the U.S, at Springfield Armory.

They started with *1, and went into the high 480xxx; so yes, there WOULD be one numbered 231. In fact, I once (1970s) handled #230, here in California - and that gun is now owned (small world) by a friend (and a contributor here) in Wisconsin, who purchased it about two years ago via mail, from somewhere else.

*up until around 20, they were marked "No. 1", "No. 2", etc.

thanks mr. hosmer .for your response .and yes that was a strangly worded question. but it got someones attention .but im finding so many forems and such for the 30-40 krag  . my confusion with them is the fact that there is verry little data. from the US. rifles made between 1893 and 1895 . im finding a wealth of info for the rifles made over sea's in 1894 but not for us made rifles. here is one of the pages i have referenced that has caused this confusion .its from the military data site( Krag Model Production Summary:

Hhmmmm - most people have trouble the other way around - finding info on the Danish and Norwegian guns!  :-)

(1) The U.S. Krag Rifle and Carbine - Poyer & Riesch - North Cape Publications

(2) The Krag Rifle Story - Mallory & Olson

(3) The Krag Rifle - Brophy

(1) is in print and available for about $25 - it will answer a LOT of questions. (2)(3) are out of print, but copies show up with some regularity, in the $75+ range, if you decide to search further.

I get your confusion.  The "Model 1892" rifles are marked "1894."  With that in mind it should make more sense.  Model 1896 carbines are marked "1895," "1896," and "Model 1896."  Then came the "Model 1898" rifles and "Model 1898" carbines - both so marked which makes it hard to tell what's what.  Then the "Model 1899" marked carbines which are easy as they're unique.

In any event serial #231 is an "Model 1892" Krag but it's marked "1894" as are the rest of the "Model 1892" rifles.

well i suspected maby that was the case with early years having that gap in them ..and yes it was somewhat confusing but that has defiantly shed some light in it for me....thank's
