Title: What Do I Have?
Post by terry614 on Aug 31st, 2011 at 8:29pm
What Do I Have? I have owned a 30-40 Krag for over 50 yrs. It is stamped on the side with 1894 Springfield Armory and the # 6517 There is a stamp in the stock behind the trigger cover that is an X with a circle under the X and some sort of Logo in the center of the circle. The barrell is 30 inches fro the end to the chamber. I have been doing research but am finding only vagi=ue information about the rifle.

:PA lot of questions will have to be asked and answers provided by you to tell you what you have. Pictures would help a great deal. The first question......does your rifle look like the ones at the top of this page?

Yes except it does not have the sling. The brackets are there but the sling is not. It has the side clip with the bolt action. I have seen a lot of pictures of ones that look a lot like it. I will post pictures tomorrow.

From the pictures, it would appear that you have a M1892 rifle that has been converted to the M1896 configuration and then some civilian owner cut the front of the stock cut off. The rear sight has also been changed to a later version, but the hand guard is the original M1892. Unfortunately, the value of the rifle has been reduced considerably due to the cut off stock.

Thanks for the input. Any idea what the stamp in the stock behind the trigger is?

The circled script "P" is a proof mark after the rifle was assembled and shot with a 70,000 psi proof cartridge. The "x" is likely a stock inspection marking. Anyway, this is what I got out of Joe Poyer's "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine", which is in print and recommended if you want to know a lot more.

Around about 24,000 model 1892 rifles were made before the model 1896 replaced it in manufacture.  They made an effort to "upgrade" the model 1892 rifles to model 1896 standard and your rifle went through that process.  Part of that upgrade was replacing the rear sight and your rifle has the 1896 rear sight.  They also removed the under-stock cleaning rods and plugged the channel and your stock should show that.  Numbers of other bits were changed as part of that process and your rifle, again, shows bits of that.  In particular the receivers were "notched" for a hold-open pin on the extractor and the extractor itself received a pin.  Your rifle has that.

What's somewhat unusual is the number of 1892 parts your rifle retains.  Most of the bolt sleeve assembly is 1892 and that's somewhat unusual but seen in the wild.  The hand guard is also the model 1892 whereas most received the 1896 edition (goes back further in the back).

When the stock was cut down they didn't also cut down the barrel and that's a plus.

Nice gun but pity that stock cut.

Thanks for the additional input. The more information I can gather the better. I'm glad I found this forum.
