Title: 1898 Carbine identification Post by dropkick03 on Oct 13th, 2011 at 2:49am
I was gifted recently a Springfield Model 1898 Krag with a stock stamped with 1899. The SN is 128167. Is there any way to search it's origins? I did a little research on here regarding SRS, but it was rather confusing more someone not familiar with this. Any help? Thanks.

That serial number is not listed in the SRS records, but is inside the range that M1898 carbines have been recorded. We would need close up pictures of the the rear sight, front sight, cartouche, handguard, and stock in front of the handguard in order to have an opinion as to whether the carbine is one of the "real" ones. The 1899 stamped on the stock would lead me to think it is a cut down rifle since a real M1898 carbine would have a 1898 cartouche.
