Title: Couple of questions about my Krag sporter Post by JWP58 on Oct 18th, 2011 at 12:26am
First off its an 1898 Sporter. It has a redfield reciever mounted rear peep. But it appears the actual apeture is missing. Does anyone know where i can find a replacement? (maybe a modern "williams" peep would fit?)
Second. My extractor is very weak, empty brass just barely falls out of the action (i'm assuming thats due to being worn out). Numrich has a replacement, but how in the world would i go about removing the original and replacing it? heres a pic of it (You need to Login |

I can't help you on the rear sight. But surplusrifle.com has a section on Krag Jorgensen rifles with complete disassembly instructions and photos. I couldn't get it to come up here lately and have heard that others have had problems with that website lately, also.
My 1896 sporter is set up much the same, except it still has the original rear sight, but on a 1903 barrel drilled and tapped for it. Are there any markings on your barrel? |

If the shell is making it into the action it is not being left in the chamber. The extractor is the long spring on the top of the bolt with a downturned hook in front. It hooks the rim of the shell and pulls it out of the chamber into the breech. It is the ejector that kicks the shell out of the breech. When you pull your bolt all the way back it should pop up due to the heal of it’s bent shape being pushed on by the bottom of the bolt. I suspect your ejector is either broke, missing or lacking in bend.

The Krag ejector is a manual one and thus the bolt must be worked with vigor to make it work correctly!!

I agree with you Ned, both of my Krags will not kick the brass out unless I pull the bolt completely to the rear smartly. Otherwise, the brass just sort of topples out.

The ejector pops up fine. And it will actually throw loaded rounds out fine. It seems that when the empty brass gets barely touched by the ejector, the rim slips off the extractor. This leads me to think the extractor isnt holding the brass tight enough...??? maybe? |

The reason the loaded round kicks out better is the concentrated weight at the front end "carrying" it, inertia-wise, so to speak. By contrast, the empty case has its' weight concentrated at the back, right at the pivot point, so does not have the same incentive to jump. That being said, you still may have a sprung extractor, or a worn hook on same.
And, let's be honest - ejection is not the Krag's strong point - never has been- never will be. The soldiers were even taught to roll the rifle slightly to the right to "help" the case fall free. Some rifles will snap 'em out, but for most it's a rather labored mechanical process. |
