I can't help you on the rear sight. But surplusrifle.com has a section on Krag Jorgensen rifles with complete disassembly instructions and photos. I couldn't get it to come up here lately and have heard that others have had problems with that website lately, also.
My 1896 sporter is set up much the same,except it still has the original rear sight, but on a 1903 barrel drilled and tapped for it. Are there any markings on your barrel?
