I could use a little help here.  Is this now a 30-06 or should 30-40 be used? I know nothing of older rifles. If it's not a collectible I'd like to possibly fire it and use it, however I'm completely ignorant as to what I have. :-?  Did I get ripped off at $170?

Just so you are clear...the U.S. Krag rifle was manufactured only in .30-40.  However, some were turned into sporters and rebarreled with Springfield 1903 barrels which use the .30-06 cartridge.  The only way to know for sure is to have a chamber cast made.  However, I don't believe you can chamber a .30-06 round into a .30-40 chamber.  So, if it were me, I would try to chamber a .30-06 round.  If it won't go, then chances are really, really good that it is still chambered for .30-40.
