I am trying to identify the rifle held by the soldier/sailor/marine shown on the handle.  I suspect that the little shovel was a souvenir, and may have been used to put sugar in your coffee.

The rifle is not too distinct, but the style of uniform may suggest the period, which might then suggest the rifle used during that period.  The shovel is stamped “Bronze” on the reverse.  “Epluribus Unum” is cast into the banner beneath the shield, which has 48 stars above 13 stripes.  I can see no identification on the uniform, the cap, or the stand-up collar.
Surely, someone has an idea as to the rifle and the time of it’s use?  I’m betting Krag rifle, but cannot confirm.
Thanks.  MAK
