Title: Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifle Post by waterman on Oct 29th, 2011 at 4:02pm
Is there any interest on this Forum in the history & minutiae of the Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifle and its predecessors? I have been shooting one for the last 18 months but have never encountered another. I have learned a bit about them, if anyone is interested, but they are very different from other US Krags.

Sure, I own one, but have not shot it, due to the fact that one of the extractor-plate springs is broken, and its' screw is missing, thus the mechanism operates sluggishly. Bore is very fine, though, which is NOT a given, considering the ammo then in use.
Have you ever had yours completely apart? I know I'm going to have to pull the barrel to repair the "device", and am not really set up to do that yet. Any thoughts? |

The extractor plate is supposed to snap back into position when the regular Krag extractor (on the bolt) hits the trip pin on the left side of the action.
I have never had this one apart. I have seen a drawing (Brophy?). It looks as if it might be just a parts replacement job, but you would need the correct parts. I think the springs and pins on both sides are identical, so finding replacements is not completely impossible. I think it is just a small coil spring and a pin or screw with threads at the small end. The bore on the rifle I have been using is also VG. Just 2 small pits near the breech. I am considering making my own 22 ammo for this rifle. I just need to spring for a custom bullet mould. I already have primed cases. The trigger pull on the rifle I have been shooting is terrible! |
