Title: What do I have here?
Post by jstein on Nov 9th, 2011 at 8:59pm
I've tried to attach an image.  It is a 30-40 Krag that is stamped "Model 1896  Springfield Armory 51088".  It does not have the "C" stamp on the rear sight so I assume it is not a carbine.  The barrel length is approx. 23" to the front of the receiver.  Muzzle looks professionally done.  I do not think it is the Cadet Version of that period based on the lack of an "under the barrel cleaning rod" and "shortened forearm".  So this leaves me thinking it might have originated as the "Standard Model 1986, Serial #51088, that was maybe sporterized".  Does this have any value to a collector?  I would be grateful for the insights of anyone with more experience, which likely means anyone reading this post.  I have more pictures that could be emailed directly if anyone requires that to help me solve the mystery.  Thank you in advance!

You are correct. It is a M1896 rifle that has been cut down to a length more suitable for use as a hunting rifle. It would seem that at least half of the Krag rifles were done this way. The collectors don't like them this way. but, if in good condition, they seem to make excellent deer rifles.
