cjwils:  We kind of wandered away from your original inquiry, regarding other rifles in .30-40 (.30 U.S. Army).  The 1895 Winchester (original and re-issue) is a nice rifle.  It is much stronger and has better metallurgy than the Krag.  It has been chambered for such powerful cartridges as .405 Win., .35 Win., .30-06, 7.62 Russian and more recently .270 Win.  It is a lever gun that can utilize spitzer bullets.  Current versions have a discrete tang safety that makes unloading by working the action less hazardous.  I briefly had a sporter in .270 Win. and it was a fine accurate rifle.  It did not have sighting that made sense with that cartridge.  If it had been in .30-40 Krag, I would still own it.  I like the Carbine version with the top hand-guard and saddle ring but I'm turned-off by the glossy wood finish and plastic rear sight.  If I saw a nice looking 1895 Winchester in .30-40 for a good price and I had the money in my pocket, it would probably go home with me!  It would be nice if Ruger offered their No. 1 single shot in .30-40.  Their No. 3 carbine never appealed to me.  Chuck
