Title: Model 1898 Krag without a cartouche stamp?
Post by remington on Nov 25th, 2011 at 5:40pm
On one of the sites, I'm looking at an 1898 30-40 Krag that appears to be in fine shape. Everything looks original, nothing replaced, like the stock. It is serial 372XXX and dates 1902. But, there is no cartouche stamp on the stock.
Nor does it have any stamps on the stock. Again, from the excellent photos of metal to wood, the stock definitely looks all original and not a replacement.
Is that normal on some of these rifles? Thanks much.

The stock is probably a field replacement done by the company armorer away from the armory. That would have no firing proof or inspectors stamp as those were only applied at the armory to newly assembled and repaired (firing proof) weapons

Being this stock has no stamps at all, how much value would be reduced?

My 1898 rifle has no cartouche or proof stamps either...  I believe it to have been sanded during an armory rebuild since I know it's not been altered in any way since returning from France in 1917.  My stock is also very dark in color and shows lots of battle wear (nicks and such).  Is your stock dark or light?

I haven't decided to buy it as yet. I would call it medium in color.

Nice looking wood... much lighter than mine.
