Is that one of those sporterized Springfield front sight bands or the end of an original Krag barrel that someone chopped off?

That's the front stub, cut-off of a Krag Rifle barrel, I think.

My bet is that the seller rummaged through a scrap or parts box in the back room of some gunsmith operation that was in business back during the Depression and found the cut-off end of a shortened Krag barrel. He tried to turn a profit on his find and succeeded.

Are bases hard to come by? I just bought a blade so I know they won't break the bank. I saw a repro base but no original ones.

Original front sight blade? Could you provide the link or source for the blade? My 1899 Carbines front sight is filed down.

The front sight blade on my 1898 DCM carbine is made of silver and has a milled edge on the rounded part. One side has a part of a slogan that says "In God We Trust".

S&S Firearms has both original and repro sight blades. Shipping is costly but the service is excellent.
