Well, I recently acquired a very nice little Krag sporter. Only an 18-1/2" barrel and stocked Mannlicher-style with a nice little schnabel fore-end.

I'm going to work up some deer loads using both 150-grain and 180-grain jacketed bullets. I expect that this little carbine will kick like a mule with heavy loads -- any deer-sized load suggestions suitable to a small carbine gratefully accepted.

This little carbine is mounted with a three-leaf express sight. It has no name or model number on it -- so I'm hoping someone on the board will recognize it. None of the leaves is marked, and each has a vertically-adjustable insert. The leaves are all loose, so the previous owner carved a little block of wood to hold up whatever leaf it is used with.

Next question: the front sight ramp is fitted with a Lyman brass-bead post. The top of the ramp is cross-hatched but otherwise unmarked. It has grooves on each side for a hood -- can anyone ID the ramp for me (I would like to get a hood for it)?

Finally, the sling swivels are attached with knurled rings -- the center posts are sping-loaded (you can puch them in, and then they spring back out) -- how do you get these off?

Hi Tom, That is a nice Krag sporter.  I do have a weak spot for Krags and lately for Krag sporters.  The only thing I can share is that it was a professional conversion.

Nice looking sporter, appears to be a very high end professional conversion. I have dealt with those type swivels on other custom rifles. They work with a detent ball that is released when you press the center shaft in. In other words they are "quick detachable", problem seems to always be that they gum up over time and the ball will not release when the detent is pushed in. You will have to clean it very well and lube it in order to get the detent working again. PM me if you would like too.

That's a pretty interesting looking sporter you have there!  As for loads, if you're worried about recoil, you might want to avoid lighter bullets (150 grain or less) and stick with 180 or 220 for game.  For shooting paper (which is all I do now), lighter loads are fine and I keep the charge well below max, so the kick isn't too bad.  I usually shoot 165 grain for paper.  165 would be great for medium game too... and the kick isn't too terrible either.

Tom:  You have a neat sporter with some interesting features.  I expect the height of the stock comb and the way it is angled will make the rifle more punishing, than it needs to be, in recoil.  IMHO as it recoils rearward it is likely to catch you in the "cheek bone".  If that happens, the front of the comb could be reshaped and lowered.
