Title: Before, During & After restoration pics Post by Kirk on Feb 24th, 2012 at 3:58am
This Krag served with a veteran's organization as a ceremonial rifle. The stock was painted white and the metal black. Most of the paint on the metal had worn off while nearly all the paint on the stock remained. Thanks to StrypEze, it looks a bit better.

I find it incredible that the original stock looks so good. Is it possible the paint served to protect the integrity of the stock all those years.

The bore shows wear but is in good condition. It has a couple of minor pits but the rifling is strong and should shoot OK. I'll find out how well tomorrow. There are still a number of flecks of paint embedded in deep pores & dents in the wood. I used a dental pick to gently lift off as much as I could. |

You did a good thing. It is a shame to see an Old warrior painted up and treated that way. Please let us know how she shoots.

Nice job and nice save too! Hard to see from the picture angle but I have to ask, is that an after market "low scope" safety on it?

Yes, evidently the group that had the rifle lost or damaged the GI safety & replaced it with a Buehler. It functions fine, just doesn't look the same. I plan to replace it eventually.
