Title: 1898 identification help please
Post by 98sahara on Mar 3rd, 2012 at 3:05am
i have an 1898 30-40 krag with serial number 375873.  it has the stylized "p" behind the trigger guard and the letters sa or s4 (cant make the second letter out sorry) stamped above that.  the front sight is molded into the barrel and the length of the barrel is 22".  there is no l.j.a. on the left hand side of the gun or a year.  it has a rear elevation sight but not like any i have seen (doesn't have windage).

i inherited this from my grandfather and i was just wanting as much info as i can get on it.  the gun overall is very nice.  stock is in good shape other than missing the wood peice on top of the barrel. the bore is good and the bolt is like butter.  no rust, no dings, im gonna keep it a while hahaha

Some pictures would be nice.  I would especially like to see the front and rear sights.

Well, with that serial number, it is NOT an original carbine, even if the barrel length is 22". Also, the front sight appears to be located further back from the muzzle than is correct for a real carbine barrel, so I suspect it was cut. Does the muzzle have a proper rounded crown? Also, the stock appears to be a modified rifle stock. Should be a real fun shooter though.

98sahara:  Your Grandfather's Krag has the 1901 Rifle sight.  The elevation graduations go to 2,000 yards in the raised position.  In the 'ladder down' position, the graduations on the side of the base (ramp) go from 100 to 400 yards.  The sight is adjustable for windage.  The lever at the front of the sight base swings to the left to loosen tension.  The upper part of the sight then pivots on the front sight screw.  If you swing the lever to the right, it again tensions the upper part of the sight to the base.  You may have to spray some penetrating oil on the sight to loosen up parts.

Thanks guys. The end of the barrel is straight. No crown. Also thank you for the info on the sights.
