I have been looking at what is supposed to be a model 1899 carbine.  The pics sent me show a really rough piece that I did not think was a carbine but the receiver says 1899.
Is it true that all 99's are carbines?
I have a Poyer book that says so, I think?
Anyway the s/n appears to be 858048?? But my book does not list any numbers that high.
This gun has 1902 on the cartouch.  It is really rough but if a true carbine I still might try it.  Its missing the HG and the sights, and the finish is really poor looking.
Any help would be appreciated.

longhunter:  It is likely the serial number is actually 358048.  It is real easy to misread Krag #s.  The 3s & 6s often look like 8s.  1899 receivers were built as carbines.  What is the length of the barrel on the 1899 you are considering?  What kind of stock is on it now?  What front sight is on it?  Original Carbine hand-guards and rear sights cost a lot on the collector market.  Photos would help others give you guidance.

I have contacted the seller to see if he can read the s/n more clearly.
The rear site is removed and a replacement dovetailed in the barrel.  The front site removed and an over the barrel ramp type inatalled..
There is a rear sling swivel inlet in the stock
The finish sucks.
I'll have him measure the barrel?
I can probably get it for 450 or 500 but I dont know if I want it that bad.
Still, it is a carbine??
He says its a rare on of 2000??  I am trying to find more info.

I wouldn't touch it for $200, 1899 receiver or not.

The barrel is totally screwed - no recovery possible. The stock has probably been ruined as well.

No 1899 Carbine is "rare", but you probably are going to have to pay upwards of $1000 for a complete one. If I guessed that the "one of 2000" is based on info from "Bowers LLC" would I be correct? That gentleman is perpetuating some bad info - he is quite ignorant, and has refused help.

Gunbroker has several 1899s right now. If you wish, I'll vet them for you - I suggest using email. I have no desire to acquire anything more in that line, so I will not bid against you.

I would in fact rather pay a higher price for a better carbine than attempt to restore something so rough.
I will look over Gunbroker and other guns I have info on.
I appreciate your offer to vet them for me.
