Title: One Big Step!
Post by Mario S. on Apr 3rd, 2012 at 9:59pm
Rather than go into all the detail as the post I was writing got "lost" as I was looking up info on the New Criterion Krag Carbine barrels. Here's the scoop: I've
had an issue w/my  sporterized Krag 1898 carbine 30 years ago in subzero weather and had the same issues in normal climate after firing it 30 years later, having to knock the spent shells out w/ a cleaning rod. I posted this about a year ago under the subject "headspace issue," and the posting thread is not here anymore. I was told by fellow Krag enthusiast Hosner that it might be my extractor, however upon trying to extract a live round (safely) by pressing down on the extractor rod w/my thumb as I was advised to try, found it wasn't the extractor because it extracted the round w/out a hitch. I took my Krag to a reliable source who told me I had a W.Stokes Kirk "refurbished" (I knew that!) w/a .30 machinegun barrel (that, I didn't know! a B.A.R.???) and he gauged the breech w/an original Springfield Armory breech gauge and was told the breech was defective meaning who knows what...worn out???  Anyway, I've decided to purchase the new 22 in. .30 Krag carbine barrels made by Criterion. Any feedback out there on these barrels? My next question is approximately what should I be paying a gunsmith to change the barrel and install the front sight and"blue" the barrel? The photo image on the Criterion website isn't the greatest. All feedback/insight welcome.

I've not replaced the barrels on my Krags, but I recently replaced the barrel on my Garand.  I purchased a Criterion barrel from the CMP and had a local gunsmith install the barrel.  The barrel is of excellent quality!
