Title: 1898 Krag accuracy with IMR4198 Post by remington on Apr 19th, 2012 at 7:24pm
I don't see much about using 4198 in Krag loads. The target shown, using the military sights, is a 2 inch, 9 shot group with my 1898 rifle at 100 yards. Got a little shaky with #10. Bullet is Sierra 165 SPT BT, 24.0 grains of 4198, loaded singly with that pointed bullet, and OAL is 3.021. Wind was SW at 8mph. I also tried, with the same bullet and range, 38.6 grains of 4064. This was a 7 shot, 2 3/8 inch group. And for some reason I can't figure out, it grouped left of the black by 5 inches. Also Bore on this rifle is excellent and slugs at .308.
Also tried my lead bullet at 50 yards. This is RCBS 180 grain FN GC, and weighs 188 grains with my 20:1 lead/tin. Sized .309. Best I could get at 50 yards is a 10 shot 2 1/4inch with 23 grains 4198, and a 5 shot 2 inch with 23 grains 4759. Anyone have advice on making lead bullets as accurate as that Sierra?
