Title: Need info. on 30-40 Krag
Post by pschwind on Apr 29th, 2012 at 10:01pm
I have a 30-40 Krag that used to be my dad's. I want to sell the gun but I know very little about it. The scope mounted on it covers most of the information on the receiver. I know it's at least 30 years old and that my dad typically didn't buy high-end guns. It could be worth $50 or $500. Any help identifying what I have would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

I apologize for the large pictures, I should have re-sized them before posting.

Very nice sporter there...  I can tell you that it's an 1898 model...  Some of the other, more senior members can probably tell you more about it than I can.  It's probably cutdown from a full rifle length.  With the bolt closed, drop a cleaning rod down the bore to measure the barrel length.  A full length rifle barrel should be 30 inches.  Most cutdowns are 22 or 24 inches.  That should be a nice shooting rifle either way...  Why do you want to sell it???

Ready for it?

It's an 1899.   ;D

The receiver, if you remove the scope, likely has "Model 1899" and started life as a carbine.  Not that it matters as it's drilled and tapped.

I will measure the barrel and post that info here. As far as selling it, I've never been a rifle or gun hunter. I love handguns and shotguns, also archery hunting so I don't have much use for it.

I have some handguns of my dad's for sentimental value that will never leave my side. As for the Krag, I would rather see it go to someone who appreciates and more importantly will use it.

I knew the drilled and tapped receiver would lessen the value, to what extent I do not know.

Again, I'm just trying to get a ballpark on value which depends on may factors.

I would estimate $175 to $250.  It is strictly utility value and .30-40 ammo is now hard to come by and expensive.  There is little to interest a collector and exterior appears rusty - IMHO.

That's why I love this forum... because there is never a shortage of knowledge.  I knew that someone would know better  based on the serial number.  As I frequently say, I'm no expert  :D

If it started as a carbine, why the replacement front sight???  Hmmmmmm  As Arte Johnson would say:  Very Interesting!

Maybe the barrel is now less than 22 inches and carbine front sight and some barrel were cut off?  Some people like really short barrels (not me).

Indeed, the barrel measures between 20.75" - 21.00".
