Title: Stock finish Post by 45ACPete on May 26th, 2012 at 11:22pm
I decided that the carvings on each side of the buttstock of my Krag (cutdown?) carbine weren't so deep as to preclude sanding them out and went ahead and did so. I used some Minwax Old English walnut stain on the sanded areas and the color is a pretty good match. Now what I'd like to do is match the sanded areas to the rest of the stock--that look that seems typical of old guns that have been gently used a lot--I guess a buildup of oils from cleaning, hands, and some grime that eventually obscures the grain. I tried a light coat of Johnson's paste wax on the sanded areas--no real change, but am I on the right track--would a slow buildup of wax with maybe a bit of dirty grease added do the trick?
