Title: Forend from S&S Firearms
Post by remington on May 29th, 2012 at 8:28pm
Has anyone had experience with a new handguard from S&S Firearms that fit an 1898 rifle with no problem? My 1898 has an 1896 handguard with an 1896 sight. I have a 1901 sight I want to use but not the proper handguard. S&S ad indicates a 1901 handguard that looks correct. Also, are the the barrel hole placements are the same for either sight and would the screws be the same? No screws with the 1901. Thank you for your help.

Screw hole locations should be the same.  I can't speak for the screws, but I'm sure that there are more experienced members here who can answer to that...

It is a full length rifle.

Have used the 1901 rifle handguard from S&S, fit is good (cut out dimensions), final outer dimensions need small amount of shaping. You will need to be able to acquire or reuse handguard barrel clips and rivet them in. Color/finish match could be the biggest chore, just start light and build to color depth gradually and finish with linseed oil if stock is still in original finish. Good luck.
