Title: Looking for information on a .30-40 Krag I have
Post by Gunston Hall on Jun 4th, 2012 at 6:39pm
I have a .30-40 Krag that has been in my family for about 55 years. My father bought it for deer hunting. It is in the same condition today as it was then. I have read a bit on this site to know that the rifle's stock has been modified.

I am at a point in life, where I need to pare down some of my things, and I would like to sell this rifle. I would like to know what it is worth, and any suggestions about where and how I could sell it.

You have a Model 1892 Rifle which has received the government alteration to 1896 specs, plus been extensively modified (after leaving the army) for hunting.

There is, IMHO, zero collector value left, but, I've seen much uglier "sporters".

If it shoots well, and has a good bore, I'd think it would be worth in the range of $300-$400 to someone who enjoyed hunting with vintage arms.

Gunston Hall:  Your sporterized Krag has a Redfield 'no-drill' model 102-k commercial peep sight on it.  This sight is worth $75 to $100 with its attachment screw.  If the bore of your rifle is good,  you have a useful sporter/shooter worth around $300, as is, to some Krag enthusiasts.  Its value is strictly utility and parts.  Some of us like the old 'Deer Rifles'.

Thank you both for your comments. Now I have to connect to the person who wants a Krag like I have. That will likely be difficult, but I have knowledge of what it is worth, so I have a good start.

Again thanks to you both.

I will throw in my thoughts on this one, too.  As one niche in my Krag collection, I have a soft spot for different looks and types of sporters and cut-down Krags.  I have many different ones in my collection now and have bought and sold quite a few over the years.
Your gun here, while probably a good shooter and a solid hunting rifle, is not a lot more than that.  With the 03 type front sight, the pistol grip added in and nothing special about the cut of the fore-end, I would not pay the above-mentioned prices for it.  In my opinion, I would say that this Krag would sit more comfortably in the $150-$200 range.
As with any gun, what you can get for it quite often depends on who is looking for what at the time, how much they want one and how much extra cash they have at the time.

Best regards,
Tom
