Hi all,

I just joined the group to start learning about the weapon I have and to start restoring it. It's a 1901. I also reenact WW2 airborne. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the Krag being used in WW2 especially by the airborne, but any use would be interesting. If you have pics of soldiers with them, that'd be great as well.

I'm not sure about WWII... but I think it's doubtful beyond training purposes.  There are other - more qualified than I - who could give a better answer than I did.  As for WWI, there were some Krags that made it to Europe, but I believe that was mostly for garrison duty by National Guard units.  My 1898 rifle is one of these!

as fir being used by the Airborne, the rifle stock would have never stood up to the abuse it would have gone through when jumping. There could have been a chance that a trooper picked one up on the battle field but he would have raqn out of ammo very quickly if her did and would have need a different weapon very soon.

Maybe the Norwegian airborne  :)

pattyd82ab:  Is your Krag a U.S. model or Norwegian or Danish?  There is no U.S. Model 1901 Krag.  There is a 1901 model sight.  Also, Krags accepted in 1901 would bear that date in their Stock Cartouche.  The U.S. government had pretty much sold off their Krags or given them to VFW posts by WW2.  I think I have read of Krags being carried on some U.S. Ships during WW2 to dispatch Marine Mines and late manufactured ammo being provided for same.  I haven't heard of Krags being sent to Allies, like 1917 Enfields and 1903 Springfields were, during the desperate days of WW2.

I wasn't sure if it was something that might have been used a t guard posts or for color guard duty. The 508 pir of the 82nd airborne was honor guard of Ike after the war, and I thought that maybe there was a chance Krags were issued for that duty.
My rifle is a US M1898 and what I've been able to gather, on line, the serial number points to 1901. Unfortunately, My great grandfather replaced the stock on it after the original stock broke, somehow. My aim now is to get the correct parts and pieces to make it correct. Any help with that would be appreciated as well.

pattyd82ab:  Welcome to the KCA site.  If you post some pictures of your 1898 Krag, you will get lots of helpful suggestions.  If you check ebay and gunBroker for "krag", you will see a constant array of parts for sale.  There are some decent looking repro stocks (oldsailor) and hand-guards that appear there.  I'd suggest you get Joe Poyer's book (less than $20):  'The American Krag Rifle and Carbine'.  It will answer many of your questions.  Krag restoration is expensive.  Knowledge will save you $$$$$.  In your honor, I am attaching a photo of SAW Airborne!
