Title: 1896 Krag Arsenal Refurbish or ??
Post by cody on Jul 1st, 2012 at 8:13pm
I have a 1896 Krag serial no. 48523 orig. Mfg. Oct-Nov. 1896 with 22" bbl, 1901 rear sight.  Very well done in appearance but stock stumps me.  Could this be a refurbish or owner custom or . . .combination???  Any assistance would be appreciated.

cody:  There is something suspect about the front sight base attachment on your barrel.  Maybe a closeup picture would show it to be correct.  What are the graduations on your 1901 rear sight?  At first glance, your Krag appears to be a shortened 1896 Krag Rifle, for hunting (IMHO).

I'm no expert... but I would guess that the barrel was cut down to 24 inches.  You should measure it to see if it is 30, 24 or 22 inches.  The muzzel looks a little squared off, although that may be because of the action.  Also, what is up with that sight blade?  Looks like it was replaced with a squared blade...  It should taper down in the front.  To measure your barrel by dropping a cleaning rod down the barrel with the bolt closed.  Mark and measure!

My sportered 1898 was cut to 24" and a proper front sight base was (poorly) brazed into place...

Cheers,
Paul

This is definitely not an armory refurbish job, if that is what you are wondering.  It was definitely done later in the life of the rifle by the owner or local gunsmith.

Thanks.  The barrel is 22.5" and the sight blade is a redfield.

Cody:  Your front sight base is not attached in the manner  the arsenal utilized.  The muzzle crown is not correct and the barrel is too long for a carbine.  Your 1901 sight has a rifle base (at the least).  You have a 'sporterized' Krag Rifle showing decent workmanship.  IMHO
