john42768: With tempered steel that has 'sprung' into a bent position, I'm sure the tip will snap off if you try to mechanically straighten it. Blacksmith skills are probably called for to take out the hardness, straighten, and re-temper. I guess the risk is tied to the cost. I believe bayonets are intended to be soft and flexible in the interior and hard on the surface.
