When I started loading 30-40 with a Lee Loader (around 1983 ish), I actually used a large plastic handled screwdriver as the mallet.  I used a tap hammer once and set off a primer trying to seat it, so I went back to the screwdriver until I finally got a plastic tipped mallet.  It scared the crap out of me when it happened, LOL!  :D
