Title: Krag with a barracks cut Post by rice123 on Mar 3rd, 2013 at 1:32am
I was in my local gun shop the guy behind the counter showed me a 98 krag dated 1901 the strange thing is it had a barracks cut like you sometimes see on WWII arms. Anyone ever seen a Krag with a barracks cut before?

What do you mean "barracks cut"? I'm familiar with the term "duffel cut" whereby the stock is cut down short enough to fit the broken down gun inside a dufflebag.

rice123: I doubt your Krag was "duffle-cut" by a soldier to get it back home. It is far more likely the stock was shortened in a sporterizing attempt. At a later date, someone has spliced on a fore-stock as a restoration. I would check the wood grain and finish very carefully, outside and inside the barrel channel, for subtle differences to ascertain if the wood parts are different. Good clear pictures would get knowledgeable opinions.

I can not get pics because I am not going back it the store to look at it. I was looking at a 03 Another guy was interested in the krag and the person behind the counter was showing it to him and giving him the duffle cut story. A restoration makes a lot more sence.

I have a 92/96 KRAG with a "duffle" cut. It is listed in SRS as being with the 25th INF Bicycle Troops ("Buffalo" soldiers ) in 1897. If it has had a piece added, they used a fore stock from another 92/96 because the front piece has the cleaning rod channel filled. I found it in a pawn shop in the part of town that a Buffalo Soldier would most likely have called home.
