Sgt. Rob:  Sure looks like an 1896 Carbine.  I would try salvaging that stock by reshaping the added on pistol grip to the original wrist contour.  The correct barrel band shows up and has the sight protector 'ears'.  The sling ring and plate show up.  Repro. parts are also available from S&S Firearms, Glendale, N.Y. (catalog viewable on line).  The real 1896 Carbine rear sight is hard to get and can bring $500.  The 1896 Rifle sight looks correct, except for the markings, and can be had for $35 to $55.  Repro. 1896 Carbine hand-guards are available and cost around $65.  You could contact a couple of members listed in the forum 'Classifieds, who sell parts, for items and prices.
