I have m1898 Springfield krag sn#415626- stock is in good original condition. However, the forend was shortened many years ago exactly 15/16 of an inch to accommodate a longer bayonet grip handle. Were these rifles modified by soldiers to hold different bayonets? Any recommendations? Please help - thanks in advance!

krag415626:� The modification to your stock is not correct.� Either leave it as it is or have a piece of walnut shaped and spliced onto your forend tip to restore the original length.� If cleverly done and stained to match, it would be almost invisible.

Sketch gives correct dimension from rear of lower band to front of upper band and stock.
