Title: 1896 carbine front sight
Post by gpm289 on Mar 31st, 2013 at 7:49pm
Am I correct that the front sight must be "mortised" in the barrel meaning it must fit into the barrel, similar to our old pasture fence which had the post drilled with three holes for the rails.  That is my take after looking at the kca photos and forum notes.

The carbines I have found on line have the front sight braised to the barrel and no stock cartouche.

Sight sits on flat surface of a very shallow dovetail, and is then brazed in place.

Parashooter's photo clearly shows in detail the Krag front sight base as installed and brazed on rifles and carbines.  The barrel finish sometimes makes the detail hard to see.
