Title: 1898 Carbine (a real one) on GB

Check out auction number 334276115, closes tomorrow.

A bit rough, but a scarce item, all there, and drawing bids like flies on a watermelon.

Thanks for the information.  Makes life a lot easier for beginners!

Also, thanks to the kca site and your personal photos, I have some confidence when I visit April gun shows for a Krag.

Granted it wasn't real pretty, but $818 was, IMHO, an outright steal!

I won the bid.  Talked to the owner and he used it for a deer rifle for years which is why it is rough.

Now do I restore it or leave as is.

Lucky for me, my wife is happy I found a new hobby to keep me occupied.

gpm289:  She's Priceless!  (not your 1898 Carbine -- Your Wife!).  Please post some pictures -- of the Carbine, I mean, so the rest of us can enjoy and offer opinions.  Go slow with 'restoration' thoughts.  You should preserve patina and only clean dirt, hardened grease, and light surface rust.  Wood responds to Linseed oil, Tung oil, Howard's wax and feed, and Pledge.

Or maybe post some pictures of your wife holding the carbine  ;)

First, yes, my wife is priceless.  As they say, I have great taste in women, too bad my wife has poor taste in men.

I will post photos ASAP, and am open to any help in properly restoring the carbine.  I do not want to add bubba to my user name.

I was able to buy a box of Winchester ammo 180 gr/2460 fps.  Will this be a safe cartridge?  I do have a gunsmith ready to check it out when I get it.

If it's standard Winchester 30-40 ammo with 180 grain silvertips, then yes, it should be fine to shoot.
