Title: Another Carbine
Post by madcratebuilder on Apr 5th, 2013 at 1:35pm
Have Krag fever bad, only cure is more Krags.  I just won this 1896 off GB.  Don't think I did too bad for $870.  Looks like the hand guard was poorly cut for the 1901 rear sight.

Uhhhh - unfortunately, that is a rifle sight, and yes, someone has butchered an 1896 handguard to make the sight fit. The stock is the later 32" M1899-style replacement, and the sling swivels have been added.

Does the barrel length/muzzle crown/front sight check out? It should, because that is definitely a carbine number. Looking at the stock, I can see the band spring, so the rifle sight is apparently just an anomaly.

You still did OK, hope it shoots well!

Barrel length and front sight look correct.  I oiled the wood and steel, came out pretty nice.  I'm going to put the hand guard in my mill and dress the bubba cut job for the time being.  I guess I should be looking for a hand guard $$$.

I have a early sight that I may swap out with.

I'm learning what to look for :-/
