"Pattern" is British Nomenclature for Model, as in "Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle" or "Pattern 1888 Lee-Metford Bayonet". A "sealed pattern" or officially accepted example of a piece of military equipment (with seal attached) was kept in the Pattern Room. This served as a reference piece to guide uniformity in manufacture.
