I hear ya about trying to use those battle sights.  I remember sometime when I was about 50 (I'm 56 now) that all the rear sights on my milsurps grew fur.  For a while I shot using my computer glasses with a big bullseye downrange.
Now, using rear aperture sights has helped a lot.  Receiver mounted are the best but even barrel mounted apertures beat tiny notches.
