I believe it to be a cutdown based on the barrel length and description of the front sight.  That serial number is past the range of known 1898 carbines.  Pictures would definitely help.  There is a photos page on the KCA main page:   (You need to Login which has pictures of the various Krag rear sights.  I'm guessing that your rear sight is the 1902, which is very common.  It's possible that your stock may be a carbine stock that was installed rather than chopping up the rifle stock.  Again, pictures would help here.  Does your Krag have the upper hand guard?
