I saw that article, too.  I wonder if there's a website to view those pictures.

ButterBolt:  Thanks for the tip.  There are five photos viewable at this time.  It will be interesting to see more when they are made available.  I thought this one was pretty interesting, of a 'Signal Corps station', apparently in the Philippines.  It can be viewed in high resolution on the 'navy.mil' site.  There are at least five 'Trap-Door' carbines partially visible in this picture.  I reduced the resolution in order to post.

The Trapdoors seem to have some sort of alteration to the front sights and one, off to the left, seems to have an odd "shadow" to the rear sight as well.

I think the Model 1873 Carbines have sight hoods on.  The one to the left maybe has a carbine sling draped around it.

They are probably Model 1884 carbines, and some have had the 1890 humped lower band, and front sight cover (of the earlier milled style) installed. Great pictures - looking forward to more. FWIW, the Signal Corps was known to have used TD carbines, here's the visual proof.

The Signal Corpsman at the table seems to be operating a telegraph key, with others around him.  Here is a neat detail of a 'courier' with Signal Corps hat badge, holding his carbine with 'Buffington sight' and sling bar clearly visible.  (Wow, what treasures must lie in boxes at government storage facilities)!

Another neat detail in this photo is this pile of stuff, that appears to be a McClellan saddle with valise.  There may be a carbine sling laying across the chaos of stirrups and straps.  This photograph is like playing "Where's Waldo"?
