Title: New member intro and question. Post by ALH on Feb 25th, 2014 at 2:04am
Hello from WI!
I am a farmer from WI who just this past year was given the privilege to hold on to a family heirloom, a 1996 Krag, which my Great Grandfather carried in the Spanish-American War. This rifle is complete with bayonete, scabbard and ammo belt. This was also the rifle that my Grandfather was using when he accidently shot his son, my uncle, during a deer drive in the late 1940's. My uncle survived and he kept the rifle until it was given to his son who gave it to me after his father passed away. It will be passed on to one of my daughters along with the history and stories. I will try to post a photo or two and if successful you will understand my question. My question is what to do with a broken stock. This crack happened a few years before I came into possession. The crack runs horizontal from rear of the trigger guard back 8" ? towards the butt plate. With only a little twist of the butt the crack opens up quite a bit. It reminds me of a loose tooth ready to fall out. I had a friend look at it and he suggested gluing and pinning it together. I didn't want any pins or evidence of a repair but after removing the stock this evening I think it is inevitable if I want to retain the original stock. My other option was to replace the stock and keep the original. What is the right thing to do? I would love to take a WI whitetail with it some day. Thanks, Joe. 100_2370.jpg ( 170 KB | 0
