Title: 1896 carbine Post by Blacksmith on Oct 25th, 2016 at 1:02am
Hi all I'm new on this site looking for opinions on this carbine as far as value. From what I see it appears original it has some things wrong with it. Some history first belonged to my brother in law bought it and used it deer hunting and so on he passed away this spring from stomach cancer. The sling bar is missing the bar and ring there is a crack in the wrist or grip and inspectors marks are gone he had sanded it or some before him did I assume it was him he re oiled the stock. It was made in 1897 according to what I could find thanks for any and all help. (You need to Login

'Blacksmith' - More photos would be needed to give a meaningful evaluation/assessment of your model 1896 Krag carbine. Especially important are detailed photos of rear and front sights. 'Overall pictures' and a description of bore condition are also helpful.

'Blacksmith' - Your Krag is a real model 1896 carbine.
As you stated, it has issues. These mainly involve the cracked refinished stock, other wood damage, and the missing hand-guard. I do not know the condition of the bore. Most of the exterior metal finish is gone. Your carbine appears to have its original sights. The model 1896 carbine rear-sight is worth around $400-$500, by itself. IMHO - Your Krag carbine is worth around $850 in its current state. This is mainly 'parts value'. It is a poor candidate for 'restoration'. (p.s. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain original Krag stocks and hand-guards. An original carbine 'sling/bar & ring' is a $75 item). I am sorry about the loss of your Brother-in-law. |

Yes its funny what you see when you go back and look at things buggered screw heads and the rear site screw head is missing and the hand guard missing its to bad but it is what is its what I call a shooter the bore looked pretty decent last I looked had some shine to it and lands looked good. I remember him saying he bought this at Montgomery Wards or someplace like that for like 50.00 he's had it ever since I can remember.
And thanks he is missed very much he was a good man. thanks for your opinion |
